A Plus-Size Woman Won Miss Alabama and Sparked a Controversial Online Discussion.
Sara Milliken achieved a significant milestone by placing first in the National American Miss pageant, making her and her supporters proud. However, her joy was overshadowed by online abuse targeting her appearance. After winning the Miss Alabama pageant, trolls labeled her an “unhealthy embarrassment.”
Despite the criticism, Milliken remains steadfast in promoting body acceptance and positivity. She stated, “Even text typed on a screen can leave a lasting impression on people.” Hurtful comments questioned her suitability for a beauty competition and made disparaging comparisons to fast-food mascots.
Her admirers have rallied in support, praising her beauty and character. One supporter remarked, “Anyone with any values and/or humanity can see that from miles away—you are so beautiful on the inside and out.”
Preparing for the national finals in Florida, Milliken refuses to let harsh criticism deter her. She shared, “To be honest, it got to me for about five minutes.” Emphasizing optimism, she added, “This kind of put me in a position to promote optimism, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.”
After three attempts, Milliken won the competition, which promotes “positive self-image by enhancing natural beauty within.” She excelled in interviews, volunteer projects, and presentations, earning high marks for personality, confidence, and communication.
